Overview

CHIHAI CHS-GM12-15BY is a Ø15 mm two-phase stepper with an all-metal reduction gearbox, made for mechanisms that need a small, repeatable step rather than continuous spin: focus drives, micro gimbals, robot arms and smart furniture latches. An 18° input step is divided down by the gearbox, so the 1:380 version moves about 0.047° per step and holds its position with power on.

Nine ratios are offered from 1:10 to 1:380, in two coil resistances, with or without a driver board.

Features

  • 2-phase 4-wire brushless stepper. No brushes to wear out, and position is set by step count rather than feedback.
  • 18° input step. Divided by the gearbox down to 0.047° at 1:380, giving fine positioning without a closed loop.
  • All-metal reduction gearbox. Metal gear train for wear resistance and a longer service life under load.
  • Two coil resistances. 10 Ω for lower-voltage or higher-current drives, 30 Ω for the standard 5-12 V drive range.
  • 1.25-4Y connector, 150 mm leads. Plugs straight into common stepper driver boards.
  • Approx. 13 g. Light enough to mount on a moving head without rebalancing.

Configuration Guide

Coil resistance

Two windings are sold. The 30 Ω version is the one the published charts are measured on and is the default choice for a 5-12 V driver. The 10 Ω version draws more current at the same voltage, which suits drivers that can supply it and gives more torque margin at low speed.

Ratio

1:10 is the coarse, quick end (1.86° per step, 300 rpm at 1000 pps) and 1:380 the fine end (0.047° per step, 8 rpm). Holding torque rises with ratio from 0.14 to 2.90 kgf·cm. Pick by the resolution and speed your mechanism needs, then check the holding torque against the load.

Driver board

The motor alone is a bare 4-wire stepper and needs an external driver. The two driver packages add a board (with or without its enclosure) for buyers who do not already have one.

Recommended Drive Settings

Drive current scales with supply voltage: higher voltage reaches the same speed at lower current. These are the manufacturer's recommended settings for the 30 Ω winding.

Test voltage Recommended drive frequency Suggested drive current
DC 12.0 V 1000 ≤0.25 A
DC 7.40 V 1000 ≤0.15 A
DC 6.00 V 1000 ≤0.10 A
DC 5.00 V 1000 ≤0.08 A
DC 3.70 V 700 ≤0.07 A

For long continuous runs, watch the motor temperature and add dwell time or external cooling if it climbs.

Wiring

Four leads on a 1.25-4Y connector, about 150 mm long: 1 white = A+, 2 black = B−, 3 red = A−, 4 yellow = B+. Direction is quoted looking at the output shaft end; swapping one phase pair reverses rotation. The wiring chart in Visual Details shows the full 2-2 excitation sequence.

Mechanical Dimensions

Body Ø15 × 20 mm excluding the shaft, overall 22.5 mm max. Output shaft Ø3 mm D-cut, 8.5 mm long, with a 2.5 mm collar. The mounting flange is 24.0 mm wide with two Ø2.10 mm holes at 20.00 mm centres, and the connector block sits 10.5 mm across. Motor alone weighs about 13 g.

FAQ

Do I need a driver?

Yes. A bare stepper cannot run from a DC supply; it needs a stepper driver that sequences the two phases. The driver packages add one if you do not have it.

Why are 10 Ω and 30 Ω both offered?

They are different windings. The charts here are measured on 30 Ω. A 10 Ω winding draws more current at the same voltage, so match it to what your driver can deliver.

How fine is the positioning?

0.047° per full step at 1:380, 1.86° at 1:10. Micro-stepping in the driver divides those further.

Does it hold position with power off?

No. Holding torque is an energised figure. With the driver disabled the shaft can be turned by hand or by load.
