Overview

The Meskernel PTGC-12X is a compact 905 nm laser distance sensor module for long-range measurement and embedded integration. It reaches at least 1200 m on a 70%-reflective building target when visibility is at least 6 km, with a 5 m minimum range on a 90%-reflective white plate. A 3.3 V UART-TTL interface supports single-shot and continuous ranging.

At 22 ±0.5 g and nominally Ø23 × 40 mm, the module suits space-constrained ranging assemblies. Its six-pin connection provides power, serial communication and an active-low enable input for host-controlled operation.

Features

  • Long-range laser measurement with explicit target-reflectivity and visibility conditions.
  • Up to 3 Hz on the same target, or 2 Hz when switching between targets.
  • ±0.7 m accuracy at distances up to 100 m; distance-dependent accuracy beyond 100 m.
  • Class 1, 905 ±10 nm laser with approximately 8 mrad receiver field of view.
  • Single, continuous and stop-ranging commands, startup self-test and configurable serial baud rate.
  • Active-low enable control and a low-power state for host-managed measurement cycles.

Long-range performance depends on target reflectivity, visibility and the measurement setup. The stated 1200 m condition is a building target; it is not a guaranteed range for every surface.

Wiring and Integration

Use the included power cable with the A1002WV-S-6P connector. Keep the supply within 3.2–3.4 V and use 3.3 V TTL signal levels. Do not connect the module directly to a 5 V supply or an RS232 voltage-level port.

Pin 1 GND
Pin 2 3.3 V DC power input
Pin 3 NC — leave unconnected
Pin 4 TTL_TXD — module serial transmit
Pin 5 TTL_RXD — module serial receive
Pin 6 Enable — pull low to start normal operation

Connect the module TXD to the host RXD and module RXD to the host TXD, with a shared ground. Pull the enable pin low for operation; drive it high to enter the low-power state. The module does not respond to commands while its MCU is off in that state.

For PC testing, use a compatible 3.3 V USB-to-TTL adapter and DEG-Tools software. Select the correct COM port and start with 115200 bps. The USB adapter is separate from the included module and power cable.

Serial protocol essentials

Frames begin with hexadecimal 55 AA. Commands use an 8-byte frame. The transmit checksum is the low eight bits of the sum of bytes 3–7; the reply checksum includes bytes 1–7. Ranging replies use STA = 1 for success and DIS_H / DIS_L for the distance value, encoded as ten times the distance in meters.

Single measurement 55 AA 88 FF FF FF FF 84
Continuous measurement 55 AA 89 FF FF FF FF 85
Stop ranging 55 AA 8E FF FF FF FF 8A

Baud-rate changes take effect after restart. Angle-measurement commands require a version fitted with an angle sensor; angle sensing is not specified as part of this configuration.

Optical window and mechanical installation

For a separate protective optical window, H-K9L optical glass or fused quartz is suitable. Use a 2–4 mm window thickness, an air gap below 0.5 mm, and align the emission axis with the window normal. A wedge angle tolerance of ≤3 arcmin is recommended. For 905 nm operation, use an antireflection coating covering 855–955 nm with ≥99.5% transmittance. Hydrophobic or hard coatings can be selected for the installation environment. Confirm the effective aperture and clearances before fabrication.

The mechanical drawing includes a 40 mm overall length, a 32 mm reference length, a 16.18 mm board envelope, a Ø22.50 ±0.05 mm feature and a Ø23 mm feature with +0/−0.04 mm tolerance. Preserve the exposed electronics within an appropriate integration enclosure; no waterproof enclosure is included.

Applications

  • Compact aviation and UAV ranging assemblies where module size, weight and serial output matter.
  • Telecommunications and geological measurement systems that need long-range distance data.
  • Outdoor distance-measurement equipment using host-controlled single or continuous ranging.

USB-to-TTL adapter, host controller and integration enclosure are not included.

FAQ

Will it measure every target at 1200 m?

No. The 1200 m specification applies to a 70%-reflective building target with visibility of at least 6 km. Lower reflectivity or poorer visibility can reduce useful range.

Can I connect it directly to USB or RS232?

The module uses 3.3 V UART-TTL. A compatible USB-to-TTL adapter or suitable interface conversion is required for other electrical interfaces.

Does this configuration include angle measurement?

Angle sensing is not specified for this configuration. The protocol's angle command applies only to hardware fitted with an angle sensor.
